What is Matrix?

Taken straight from Matrix’s own website:

Matrix is an open standard for interoperable, decentralised, real-time communication over IP

The overarching goal of Matrix seems to be to integrate current communication platforms in a decentralized environment that is also secure and private.

This is a very promising claim and Matrix has found a way to eliminate the main pitfall; accessibility and ease of use. They have achieved this by allowing users to get started without needing to set up their own homeserver.

If you are curious about the architecture and the technicalities: The Matrix Specification is very impressive, but we will not be deep-diving into it in this article.
